Heroes of the Storm Trademark Dispute

It’s not even been a week since Heroes of the Storm was officially announced as the rebranding of Blizzard All-Stars and a new controversy has already arisen.

It seems there is a Finnish tabletop RPG for children named Myrskyn Sankarit which translates into English as, you guessed it, Heroes of the Storm.  The creator of Myskyn Sankarit, Mike Pohjola, has filed a dispute with Blizzard’s trademark application in the EU saying that he is concerned about the two games co-existing peacefully.  I’m no expert on Trademark law, but it is possible for multiple businesses or products to have the same trademark so long as there is little chance the two would be confused for one another.  Even though one is a pen-and-paper game and the other a computer game there is still enough overlap to give merit to the dispute claim.

We’ll see how this turns out in Finland and the rest of the EU in the months to come.
