Artifacts and Why I Think They’re Bad for Heroes of the Storm

by - 10 years ago

Before we start here, I’d like to make it clear, I LOVE Heroes of the Storm. I’ve spent countless hours playing it.  I love how the game focuses on teamwork and less on individual stats, while combat is very fluid and engaging. And the team brawls are always exciting!

With that out of the way, let’s talk about Artifacts.

From the moment they revealed the word “Artifacts” I was skeptical. The one thing that makes Heroes stand out for me is that character power only comes from talents: there are no items, runes or anything besides talents to improve your performance. This is what made the game for me; you could just jump in and be at the same power level as any other player, no matter how long they’ve played or the amount of cash they’ve spent. Skill becomes the factor that separates the good from the bad, and with character power equal, a skilled team that works together should always trump an disorganized and/or unskilled team.

Now they’re doing this: artifacts to boost your character power. This rewards players who spend a huge amount of time into the game while penalizing players who don’t have the chance to play much. New players who have just gotten into the game will be at a disadvantage, with possibly having to face off against experienced players PLUS said runes making their heroes that much more powerful and harder to deal with.

I really don’t think this is the way to go for Heroes. I feel like that the most compelling feature of the game is that you can just hop in and play without needing to grind anything. Now they’re changing that one thing that sets it apart from other similar games. With this change, a lot of players including myself will become disinterested in the game simply because it’s an additional grind.

To be clear, I know there’s grinding to unlock hero color variations and such but those are OPTIONAL and you don’t HAVE to do them. They don’t offer any benefit in-game and are purely cosmetic.  It’s a cool thing to grind matches for if you want to make sure you’re showing off your main characters with a different look then the original!

Also a very good point by @OliviadGrace:

I agree with her. The artifact effects aren’t little things like gain 0.1 health or something. A flat 10% increase to health, in a game where every point of health matters, is a HUGE buff. Considering it’s gated by gold, and gold can only be acquired through gameplay, then that’s a lot of additional hours spent leveling your artifacts.  Like Olivia said, they’re things players will see as a required grind in order to stay competitive. What about the impact for new players? Will they be forced to focus on one hero to grind up his/her artifacts before getting to play a new hero?

The one feature I have ALWAYS heard when talking to new and old players alike is that they massively enjoy having no items or runes. Talents are awesome and they provide enough of an increase in effectiveness AND a reward for investing in a single character. This simplicity is what makes Heroes cool.

Another point to look at is how they’ll have to make matchmaking fair. Will they differ between players using artifacts and those not? Or even between players that have artifacts maxed, and those only at level 1? Either they’re going to make a huge change to matchmaking, or there will be a lot of players facing players that simply have better heroes then them.

Finally: yes, I know Alpha is Alpha. That said, what good would it be if I, as an alpha tester, didn’t offer my first impressions and thoughts? And this isn’t the last of it, either: when artifacts do go live on the Tech Alpha I’ll be there to test them thoroughly and give the best feedback I can.

Let me know what you think about artifacts!

Then again since they aren’t even in game yet, it’s impossible to know just how much of an impact they really will have. This game is still in alpha and Blizzard is trying new things. Kudos to them for giving everything a try.

Having seen runes such as 10%+ health increase, that is a HUGE impact on certain heroes. but I do agree, Kudos to them for trying it out, like I said in the post, it’s merely a first impressions post, i’ll be sure to write how I feel when I’ve had the chance to actually play with them and see how it is.

Considering how powerful the artifacts are, it’s a bad move considering the end goal for Heroes; ultimate casual MOBA experience. If we want hardcore grindfests, we could play any of the alternatives. The primary appeal of Heroes is it is easy to jump into and get out. The matches are quick and fun. It’s why I loved Hearthstone, but I can barely sit through a game of MTG. We’ll see what happens, but I agree with you.

The amount of work or grinding involved is going to kill the game for me, just like it did with LoL (still level 12 despite enjoying the game very much before the grind got to me). However, it’s not even the biggest problem. This is just extra work with no benefit. For some reason, a LOT of people are STILL having a difficult time understanding that options are not the same as choices. You have the OPTION of taking several different artifacts, but your only CHOICE is whether you want to be optimal or “creative.”

1% of players are going to do the research and experimentation to determine what’s best, 69% are just going to blindly follow whatever they recommend, and the other 30% will be casual or creative players who either don’t realize or don’t care that they’re at a numerical disadvantage. That is, until they go on a massive losing streak, suffer a LOT of toxic interactions with players frustrated with suffering a loss because their teammate isn’t following a system nobody actually enjoys, and associate HotS with poor balance and a negative community.

Want to hear my experience with LoL? 15 minutes looking through mobafire for a good hero build and 5 minutes spent setting it up for a hero that I might not even get to use because someone else on my team took that hero’s role first. Even if I do get that hero, I still have to keep the guide open to see what skills and items I should get. It doesn’t really matter if there’s less setup involved with artifacts, I’m STILL locked into a build even if I get grouped with 2 or 3 other players playing the same role.

If you REALLY want a system like this, here’s what you do: move all the level 1 talents other than “Path of the” to level 2. Put in a new level 1 talent tier with several different “Path of the” talents that all offer passive stat increases. This way, people can choose their “path” AFTER the game has started. No out of game setup, no getting locked in before you can communicate with your team, and your chosen “path” is VISIBLE to the other team.

I agree with not having preset stat pages. instead of artifacts i think they should implement an in match store/merchant getting money for killing creatures/players that you can then spend on a sword for your fighter or a shield for your tank even WC3 had 6 items slots for your hero character. On the other hand an item you can spend real world money on that isn’t vanity to boost your characters stats which gives you bonus hp or dmg most certainly isn’t the way to go.

I like the idea of more customization, but don’t like the ‘required grind.’

What if Blizzard gave you one maxed out Gem, Relic, AND Trinket when you start? Imagine you make a new account, and you already have +15% HP, and 1% HP/sec regen, and 5% movement speed. Then, when the introduce the player to Artifacts (say, Player Level 11), it says, “Here are OTHER Artifacts you can spend gold on. You already have maxed out good ones, but if you want to pursue others, here is how you can do that.
