Heroes of the Dorm Concludes This Weekend

by - 8 years ago

Two months of collegiate Heroes of the Storm action comes to an epic conclusion this weekend at the Centurylink Field Event Center in Seattle, Washington. This event began with almost 500 teams competing, but now only four remain.

Tennessee, University of Texas Arlington, University of Connecticut, and Arizona State University will vie for $75,000 in tuition for each player on the winning team, as well as the right to call themselves Heroes of the Dorm Champion.

Here is a quick look at each of the teams.

Tennessee “We Volin”

It is hard to call a number two seed an underdog, but that is what happens when you face off against three number one seeds. Tennessee is led by professional Heroes player, Roflcopter, and his skilled assassin play has helped them advance thru a very difficult bracket to earn their spot in the Heroic Four.

UT Arlington “Dark Blaze”

If you follow the competitive scene then you have probably heard of Team Blaze. This up and coming pro team got it start in last year’s Heroes of the Dorm, and several players from that team are back to once again represent UT Arlington. Yuuj anchors this team with his rock solid support play. Team Blaze is known for their strong and creative drafts, and Dark Blaze is no different. Team Blaze is currently in the midst of some unexpected roster shuffling so it will be interesting to see if this is any sort of distraction for the players on Dark Blaze.

ASU “Real Dream Team”

This team is favored to win it all and they know it. ASU made the Finals in last year’s event, and this year’s team looks even stronger. Led by MichaelUdall, this team boasts three players with extensive experience on the professional scene. They haven’t dropped a single game in this event, and they are wasting little time in defeating their opponents, with an average game time of 16:12.

UConn “Tricky Turtles”

A patient and methodical team, UConn grinds down their opponents with an average game time of 20:28, the longest by far of any of the remaining teams. However they do it, it is effective, as they have yet to lose a game in this event. They have shown more aggression in recent matches, so they aren’t simply a defensive team.

One great aspect of this event is the amount of support the teams have garnered from their schools. More and more schools are embarrassing eSports and promoting their teams via social media. University of California Irvine, who made it to the round of 32, recently started offering scholarships for eSports players and there are plans to build a gaming arena in the Student Center. The Athletic Department for ASU has been very outspoken in support of Real Dream Team, and even provided practice space to the team. Once the team qualified for the Heroic Four the school even inquired about sending the marching band to Seattle. All of this attention is not only great for Heroes of the Storm, but it is also validation for eSports as a whole.
