Tyrande - High Priestess of Elune

Beloved of the goddess Elune, but beloved too by both of the brothers Stormrage, Tyrande Whisperwind grew up in a time of upheaval: Queen Azshara and her Highborne night elves had aligned themselves with the Burning Legion, and it was up to a resistance begun by Tyrande and Malfurion to counter a demonic invasion. As the War of the Ancients raged on, Tyrande struggled with the many betrayals of Illidan, and at the war’s end, saw him imprisoned in the Barrow Dens for daring to keep some water from the destroyed Well of Eternity in his possession.

From that latest betrayal (far from Illidan’s last), hope was given new life, as the last waters of Eternity gave rise to Nordrassil, the World Tree, which granted immortality to the night elves in return for their guardianship over the continent of Kalimdor. Tyrande led her people in this charge for 10,000 years as the kaldorei picked up the pieces of their shattered civilization, but she would lead them through yet another upheaval against the Legion…

When Thrall’s Horde arrived on Kalimdor during the Third War, a contingent led by Grom Hellscream ran afoul of Tyrande’s mentor, the demigod Cenarius. The death of Cenarius and the swath of destruction left by the Warsong Clan were only a prelude to the coming of the Scourge and their demonic masters, which drove Tyrande to awaken the druids and, fatefully, to free Illidan from his imprisonment. Time had changed both Stormrage brothers; where Malfurion was more aloof, Illidan was embittered, but Tyrande was hopeful that both would help her save their people as they had during the War of the Ancients.

While Illidan’s lust for power led him down a different path, Malfurion again hatched a plan to save the night elves by sacrificing their most precious resource: after harrying the Scourge in their advance on Mount Hyjal and the World Tree, where Tyrande herself led the last line of defense against Archimonde, Malfurion blew the Horn of Cenarius, destroying the World Tree and Archimonde along with it. Again, the kaldorei found their world turned upside down, with Tyrande to set them back on the right path.

What lies at the center of Tyrande’s being is her faith in Elune’s grace. Her trust in the Goddess has been the sustaining force for the kaldorei throughout their many trials and sacrifices. While the druids protect the dream, she and her Sentinels protect the waking world from all threats, both natural and unnatural. While she’s found some kinship in the Alliance and their Holy Light, she’s nonetheless taken the task of protecting Kalimdor upon herself, as she has for the last 10,000 years.

The cruelties of fate have taken away the arcane mastery of the kaldorei, and their immortality, and have driven a wedge borne out of ephemeral duty between Tyrande and her true love… but not even death can separate her from her faith. Even when her last arrow is spent, her faith in the light of the moon goddess is her weapon, and woe betide those who stand against the goddess’ chosen priestess.
