Q&A

Several members of the design team took to Reddit today to answer questions from the community. As you can imagine the topics were wide-ranging and the thread is already over 600 posts at the time of this writing. Don’t worry if you don’t have the time or the patience to wade thru a 600 post Reddit thread, we did it for you. Here are some of the more interesting takeaways from this highly informative Q&A: Probius It was a conscious design to not have Photon Cannon prioritize Heroes. They did not want Probius to be a lane bully able to zone out enemy Heroes with aggressive Photon Cannon placement. Probius is meant to be more of a defensive Hero. Having the Cannon auto-target minions first forces players to decide between forward placement to help clear minion waves or rear placement to defend against diving Heroes. Builder Heroes have traditionally been difficult to

Q&A With Alan Dabiri and Travis McGeathy

by Alebeard on

The latest edition of Brawl with the Blues, featuring Ragnaros, also included a special Q&A with Alan Dabiri, newly named Game Director, and Travis McGeathy, new Lead Game Designer. Here is a quick summary of some of the things they discussed: Alan is accepting of his new nickname, Captain ADab They want to show how Heroes is special beyond other games in the genre. They are trying to work on more ways to highlight individual achievements with things like Quest Talents and the MVP System. On fire call out may come back. It is still a team based game, but they want to highlight individual performance more. More cross games promotions like the Nexus Challenge to come. They are working on getting a better kill long into the game. The level progression system is Travis’ baby. Progression 2.0 will include uncapped Hero and Account levels, or at least the caps will

Heroes Brawl Reddit Q&A Highlights

by Alebeard on

Several members of the Heroes of the Storm team took to Reddit today to conduct a Heroes Brawl and Samuro themed Q&A. Here are some of the more interesting revelations from that discussion: Samuro’s Blizzcon eligibility: Samuro will not be available for play in the Blizzcon tournament. A hero needs to be in the wild for two weeks before it is playable in tournaments. Invulnerable fountains: They will not be making this change before Brawls go live. Their formula for siege heroes was too high and this will be adjusted going forward. Internal testing has shown that as players learn how to maximize their Objective advantage it often costs a team more than it gains them to remove a fountain. Balance in Brawls: They are relying on their standard hero balance a lot. That means there will be some heroes that are stronger and weaker. They would argue this happens on

Highlights from the Reddit Balance Q&A

by Alebeard on

Several members of the Heroes of the Storm team took to Reddit today to answer questions from the community. They provided a ton of insight into specific Heroes, as well as their overall design philosophies. Here are the highlights in case you don’t feel like reading thru a 700+ comment post on your own: They are working on adding a reduced range version of Zealot Charge to the base kit of Artanis. They are satisfied with Tyrael‘s trait and do not plan to rework or replace it. They are fine with different Traits and Abilities having varying degrees of power. The next Heroes they are planning to redesign will be Arthas and Anub’arak. Nothing specific, but they would like to spruce up their Talents in keeping with the new design and Talent philosophy. These changes won’t be as large as the recent changes received by Kael’thas and Illidan. In a

Heroes of the Storm Q&A Wrap-Up

by Zenstyle on

If you had questions about the talent system for Heroes of the Storm, this was definitely the Q&A to attend. Senior Community Manager Kevin Johnson was joined by Senior Game Designer Richard Khoo, Game Designer Matt Cooper and Game Director Dustin Browder, and the group dropped a lot of knowledge on the theories behind the current systems in place. The Q&A began with a discussion on the tech alpha so far, with the guys expressing their excitement. Browder admitted that watching high tier players has made plain that some heroes need some fine tuning, Uther being the specific hero mentioned. This is not terribly surprising given community reaction to the fabled Paladin and his annoying ability to interrupt objective captures for quite a while after dying. From there the team went on to discuss an earlier talent system, explaining that it didn’t work out because each hero has specific needs.

Heroes of the Storm Q&A Wrap-Up

by Zenstyle on

The third of the Heroes of the Storm Q&As just wrapped up, shedding light on a number of different topics fans presented questions about. Q&A regular Kevin Johnson was joined by Senior Art Director (and beard enthusiast) Samwise Didier and Senior Artist Phill Gonzales. The trio mostly talked art, from origins of specific maps to the decision making process when it comes to skins. While it was initially difficult to make out because of some audio issues, Sam and Phill began by discussing the recently updated Dragon Shire map and just how the map’s aesthetics affected the populace. The humans sport a classic Lord and Ladies getup, while the mercenaries feature armor comprised primarily of pieces taken from dead knights. Both groups clearly have more gold than they need. Cursed Hollow presents things in a decidedly darker light. That makes sense considering that the major map objective is the Raven

Today was the 2nd Live Q&A hosted by Blizzard allowing fans to tweet them questions about Heroes of the Storm. You can watch the whole thing here. Watch live video from Heroes of the Storm on TwitchTV This Q&A featured Kevin Johnson (Community Manager), Kaeo Milker (Senior Game Producer), and Dustin Browder (Game Director), followed by a live match shoutcasted by Sean Plott (Day) alongside Mr. Browder. Much like the issues most people shoutcasting the game currently, Day went in blind not knowing most of what is happening and asked questions to Dustin that really helped clarify what is happening. But first the Wrap up! Right now the teams are currently working on: Internal Alpha Stage Art passes Going over everything again with art and colors User XP / User testing Hero design More Heroes like Abathur, commander-types. Heroes that play in fundamentally different ways. Click the question link to

If you can’t get enough Heroes of the Storm, never fear, a second Q&A session will soon be upon us. Blizzard announced earlier today that two days from the time of this posting Game Director Dustin Browder, Senior Game Producer Kaeo Milker and Senior Manager of Community Development Kevin Johnson will once more take to Twitch in order to answer your questions about the upcoming character brawler.  The Q&A will take place at 11 AM PST and the gang will be answering questions tweeted to the @BlizzHeroes Twitter account. If you want to have a shot at seeing your name on screen, ask them a question using the #HeroesQA hashtag. After the Q&A, Day will be joining Dustin Browder to cast a live on-stream Heroes of the Storm dev match, so be sure to tune in for what should be a fun afternoon. It’s been a few weeks since our first Live Q&A

Heroes of the Storm Live Q&A Wrap-Up

by Zenstyle on

The Heroes of the Storm Live Q&A just wrapped up and we got a fair bit of new information on the game, the status of the beta and what we can expect going forward. Community Manager Kevin Johnson presided over the Q&A alongside Starcraft 2 Game Director Dustin Browder and Senior Artist Phill Gonzales. To answer the big question on everyone’s mind, there is no set date for the Heroes of the Storm beta. Browder explained that the version of the game we saw at BlizzCon was very much designed for a 20 minute experience. There’s still more work to be done on talents, social systems, et cetera. He did however emphasize that the team is very excited about the game and wants to get the beta out as soon as possible. That answer about meets expectations as, surely no one expected a hard date. Speaking of the talent system, both Browder
