Should You Reroll Your Loot Chests?

by - 7 years ago

The launch of Heroes 2.0 is fast approaching. While the release of 2.0 will include a new Battleground, a new Hero, and a new Progression System, it is the thought of opening dozens of Loot Chests that has many players the most excited.

One of the features of Loot Chests is the ability to reroll a chest if you are not happy with the contents. This option comes at a prize however and that price must be paid in Gold. While the cost isn’t inconsequential, it does give players a second and even third chance of rolling a better Loot Chest.

Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy answer to the question of whether or not to reroll a Loot Chest. There are too many variables from one player to another to allow for a definitive answer. Things like the size of your Collection, how much Gold you have, and your personal preferences for Heroes, Mounts, and Skins all play a factor in deciding whether or not to reroll. With that being said, I think we can come up with some basic guidelines that players can apply to their situations.

Common Loot Chests

As the name implies, this will be the most common type of Chest that players receive. However, due to the recent changes to the Veteran Loot Chest rewards, players will only receive five of these Loot Chests with the launch of Heroes 2.0.

Assuming you have a reasonable amount of Gold, deciding whether or not to reroll a Common Loot Chest is a fairly easy decision. If your Common Chest does not contain at least one Rare item then you should reroll it. This will cost you 250 Gold, but now that Gold can only be used to buy new Heroes and reroll Chests it makes sense to reroll liberally if you have more than 15,000 Gold built up. A second reroll will cost you 500 Gold and a third will cost you 750, so deciding whether or not to reroll multiple times will depend on exactly how much Gold you have. Provided you have enough Gold, I think you can make a case for rerolling a second time if you still haven’t gotten at least one Rare item, but if you go two rerolls without receiving a Rare item I think you cut your losses rather than pay 750 Gold for a third roll.

The number of duplicate items you receive in your Loot Chest also plays a factor in determining whether or not you should reroll, but we will get into that later.

Rare Loot Chests

Players will not receive any Rare Chests as a part of the 2.0 conversion but they will receive one Rare Chest for every 25 Player Levels they earn once the new Player Progression System goes live. Rerolling a Rare Chest also costs 250 Gold. Rare Chests are guaranteed to contain at least one rare item. Deciding whether or not to reroll a Rare Chest will depend on how much Gold you have and whether or not the Rare item you receive is a duplicate. This is also where the size of your collection comes into play.

If you get a duplicate Rare item in your chest you will be awarded 20 Shards. Since it costs 100 Shards to forge (buy) a Rare item, you effectively lose 80 Shards worth of value every time you get a duplicate item. With that in mind, I think it makes sense to reroll a Rare Chest once if the rare item you get is a duplicate. You could even make a case to reroll a second time if you still get a duplicate, but that will be more dependent on exactly how much surplus Gold you have.

You also have to take into account how many items you have in your Collection when deciding whether or not to reroll. The more items you own, the less sense it makes to reroll if you get a duplicate. The more items you own the more likely you are to get a duplicate and why pay more Gold if the odds are that you will just to get another duplicate? For many players, this might not be an issue initially, but for those with large Collections, and as your Collection continues to grow, it is something to consider.

Epic Loot Chests

Most of the chests that players will receive when Heroes 2.0 hits will be Epic Loot Chests. These chests are guaranteed to contain at least one Epic item and rerolling starts at 500 Gold. A duplicate Epic item will earn you 100 Shards, compared to the 400 Shards it takes to forge an Epic item, which means duplicate items are a 300 Shard loss in value.

Deciding whether or not to reroll an Epic Chest is very similar to deciding whether or not to reroll a Rare Chest. If you get a duplicate Epic item and you have the Gold, it makes sense to reroll the chest once. The more Epic items in your Collection, the less likely you should be to reroll because you got a duplicate. With the second reroll costing 1000 Gold it is difficult to ever make a case for rerolling an Epic Chest a second or third time.

Legendary Loot Chests

This is a special type of Loot Chest that will only be available as part of the 2.0 Veteran Rewards. Players will receive one Legendary Chest, up to a maximum of ten, for every 100 Player Levels they have after the 2.0 conversion. These chests are guaranteed to contain at least one Legendary item.

At this point, we don’t know how much it will cost to reroll these chests or if you can even reroll them at all. Assuming they can be rerolled I would expect to cost to be either 1000 or 1500 Gold. Although the price is steep, if you are loaded with Gold it is probably worth rerolling once if your Legendary item is a duplicate since it costs 1600 Shards to forge a Legendary compared to the 400 you will receive for a duplicate.

Deciding whether or not to reroll a Loot Chest is something that will vary from player to play. While how much Gold you have and the quality of items that appear in your Chest can influence whether it makes sense to reroll, ultimately it comes down to personal preference. If you like what is in your Chest then keep it. Who cares if you didn’t get a Rare or if one of the items was a duplicate? If you did get a Rare item, but you don’t like what you got then, by all means, reroll the chest if that is what you want to do. Use the above guidelines a rule of thumb, but don’t be so worried about min/maxing the system that you miss out on the fun of getting cool stuff.

One last tip when it comes to Loot Chests: the contents of Loot Chests are determined when a chest is opened. This means that if there really isn’t anything that you want right now it makes sense to wait to open your Loot Chests until there are new items available. Obviously, we are all going to want to open our initial chests when 2.0 goes live, but there is a case to be made for waiting to open any subsequent chests that you earn until the next new Hero comes out. This will increase your odds of getting the new Hero, new skins, or new mounts without having to spend Gold, Gems, or Shards.

Good luck and may all your Loot Chests roll Epic!
